Lake Magdalene Location, ZIP Codes and Neighborhoods
Lake Magdalene is an unincorporated community in northern Hillsborough County, within the broader Tampa area. The ZIP codes retained from this guide are 33612, 33613 and 33618. These postal areas extend beyond individual neighborhood boundaries, so use the subdivision and street address to narrow a search.
Your neighborhood starting points include Avila, Lake Magdalene Woods, Northlakes, Heather Lakes and Country Lakes. Each offers a different part of the area’s mix of planned communities, residential streets and lake settings. Confirm the exact subdivision when searching common names such as Heather Lakes or Country Lakes, which can also appear elsewhere in the region.
Nearby communities include Lutz and Cheval to the north, Northdale and Carrollwood toward the west, and Forest Hills toward the south. Dale Mabry Highway, North Florida Avenue, Bearss Avenue and Fletcher Avenue help connect these areas. As a result, the best route depends on which side of the lakes a home occupies.
Lake Magdalene History: Farms, Schools and the Bearss Family
Long before suburban development, Lake Magdalene was a rural settlement built around its lakes and farms. The Hillsborough County Historic Resources Survey records a post office opening on July 17, 1888. Local families also petitioned for Hazen School, established near the lake’s south end that August.
Another chapter began when Isaac W. Bearss and a group from Missouri arrived in December 1894 after an eleven-week wagon journey. They hoped to grow citrus, but severe freezes quickly tested those plans. In 1895, Bearss helped establish a church that initially met in a schoolhouse. Later, residents moved an entire church building on logs to a new site near Lake Magdalene Boulevard.
Schools changed with the community, too. Horse-Pond School took its name from Horseshoe Pond, now Lake Carroll. In 1907, it moved and became Lake Magdalene School. The county account describes farming continuing into the early 1960s. That history adds context to the older road names and lake-centered development visible today.
Lake Magdalene Homes for Sale and Waterfront Settings
Lake Magdalene homes for sale include established single-family properties, lakefront homes and condominium options. The mix makes it possible to search by setting as well as home size: direct waterfront, a neighborhood near the lake, or a residence closer to the main travel corridors.
The USF Water Atlas identifies Lake Magdalene as a 252-acre private lake. It also provides water-quality sampling information and lake characteristics. Published acreage estimates vary, so this guide uses the Water Atlas figure and names the source.
Direct lake frontage, a water view and shared lake access are different property features. A nearby address does not automatically provide boating or shoreline access. For a particular home or condominium, confirm the recorded access rights and applicable association rules. That is especially useful when comparing a lakefront house with a condominium offering shared facilities.
The lake setting also affects how homes feel day to day. Consider the outlook from the living areas, outdoor seating, shoreline vegetation and the orientation of the home. Meanwhile, properties away from the water may offer different yard layouts or easier access to the roads you use most. Browse current listings above rather than using the old 2017 average as today’s price guide.
Avila Homes, Golf and Country Club Amenities
Avila is a major part of the area’s luxury-home search. Its established golf and country-club setting deserves more than a passing mention in a list of neighborhoods. The Avila Property Owners Association describes the club’s beginnings in 1980 and developer Bob Sierra’s role in the community’s creation.
Golf, tennis and outdoor recreation
Avila Golf & Country Club offers championship golf, tennis and organized club activities. Its official amenities overview also includes a fitness center, training programs and a Mediterranean-inspired Swim Pavilion with a Junior Olympic pool. These facilities make the club a destination for more than a round of golf.
Clubhouse dining and social activities
The club’s dining and event offerings add another layer to the neighborhood. Members can explore restaurant service, private events and a social calendar that includes wine tastings and other gatherings. Check the club directly for current offerings and guest arrangements.
Comparing Avila properties
In an Avila home search, compare golf-course position, lot layout, outdoor living areas, pool design and the extent of renovations. These property details are more useful than assuming every home delivers the same experience. Also review current club membership categories separately from the home purchase. Golf and amenities memberships have different privileges; ownership alone should not be treated as a promise of club access.

Parks, Arts and Things to Do Near Lake Magdalene
Beyond the private lake, the surrounding area offers public recreation and cultural activities. Roy Haynes Park & Recreation Center provides classes, programs and community events. Check its county page for the current schedule.
In nearby Carrollwood, Carrollwood Village Park offers a playground, splash pad, dog park and skatepark. These are public park amenities, separate from the facilities available through any particular homeowners association or private club.
The Carrollwood Cultural Center on Lowell Road adds theatre, concerts, galleries and classes. Its campus includes performance space, art studios and The Studio building. Browse the events calendar for performances and exhibitions, or explore classes in art, ceramics, dance, music and theatre.
For another outdoor option, Northdale Park & Recreation Center offers a paved trail, playground and activities including pickleball. Together, these nearby destinations provide options beyond the lake without requiring a trip into downtown Tampa.
Dining and Travel to Tampa, the Airport and USF

Approximate driving distances
About 10 miles for the reference route. The published light-traffic drive estimate is about 14 minutes; allow extra time for downtown traffic and parking.
About 14 miles and roughly 23 minutes for the reference drive. This excludes parking, check-in and security time.

University of South Florida
The University of South Florida campus is another relevant destination east of the area. Fletcher Avenue provides an east–west connection toward the university district. Choose the specific campus building and parking location when checking a commute; an estimate to the edge of campus can understate the complete trip.
