History of 33616

  1. 1880s Henry B. Plant made the tip of the Interbay Peninsula the end of his railroad line and built a deep-water port there, because Tampa’s own harbor was too shallow for the large ships of the day. He added two hotels, the St. Elmo Inn and the Port Tampa Inn, the latter built on stilts over the bay.
  2. 1893 The state legislature granted Port Tampa City a charter on June 30, making it a self-governing town.
  3. 1898 Port Tampa was the main embarkation point for the Spanish-American War invasion of Cuba. Soldiers were quartered in the area, and Theodore Roosevelt and his staff passed through on their way to Cuba.
  4. 1961 The City of Tampa annexed Port Tampa City on May 11, and it ceased to exist as a separate town. Residents still call the area Port Tampa City.

Before You Buy in 33616

33616 sits on low ground at the tip of the peninsula, and flood exposure can change from one street to the next, especially near Old Tampa Bay. The City of Tampa counted South of Gandy and Port Tampa among the hardest-hit areas after the 2024 hurricanes, so ask about each home’s flood history. Review the property’s FEMA flood map, elevation certificate if available, roof age, wind-mitigation report and property-specific insurance quotes before making a decision.

Much of the area south of Gandy Boulevard lies in the city’s coastal high-hazard area. The City of Tampa’s South of Gandy Coastal Area Action Plan sets out recommendations to help the area manage storms and flooding, and is worth reading before buying here.

For condos, townhomes and gated communities, also review the association’s reserves, insurance coverage, marina or club fees, and any planned assessments.

On waterfront and near-waterfront homes, ask for the seller’s flood disclosure and insurance history early in the process. Florida Statute 689.302 currently requires disclosure of flood risks to prospective purchasers.
